Salt Works Cottage
  
     
 

The cottage was built in 1760 (Alan Bottomley, 'Discovering Southwold'). Originally there had been an adjacent single-storey extension built out from the southern gable which can just be seen in the old photograph (right). This is thought to have been a weighing shed. The cottage presumably provided accommodation for the works manager. The brickwork is said still to be suffering the effects of long-term saturation with salt.

1894
The Salt Works goes into liquidation.



 

1910
The site and buildings is sold. (purchaser not known)

 



 

Early 1930s
Hubert Palfrey - a local builder, purchases the land and remaining buildings, including the cottage. (See St Edmund's Hall, Fox Yard and 24 High Street for more about Hubert Palfrey)

1935
